June 9th - "Dog Alert" - ? to 5km past Slyudyanka

Another beautiful, sunny day today.  Started on a hill per usual and the bugs were ferocious.  After about 40km we came to 6km of glorious downhill which took us out of the thick forest and into the wide open spaces of the Lake Baikal region. The first town we came along was Kultuk, which looked like a rough and tumble town that I was happy to get through.  Next was Slyudyanka where we were hoping to find a hotel and have a shwwer and wash some clothes.  This turned out to be a fiasco - it took us two hours to figure out after much searching and indecipherable sign language from the few who tried to help that there were only two hotels in the town - size of 19,000.  One was full and the second one we never did find!  It was getting on 7:30pm at this stage so we had to hightail it out of town to try and find a camp spot.  Ali and I were both grumpy at this stage as we had only had potatoe chips and chocolate bar for "lunch" and a mystery dough ball for a roadside stand each for "dinner".  On the outskirts of town we then ran into our first angry dog who chased us and snipped at our heels.  After 5km or so we managed to find a spot under some power lines out of site where the trees had been cleared save for some bushes.  Tummy is hungry!!
