I saw a ger with solar panels today, which was an unexpected sight as we are in the middle of nowhere Northern Mongolia. Left me wondering why we don't implement this more into building design in Canada. The landscape has been absolutely beautiful today with mountains as far as the eye can see in all directions and in the valley bottoms gers and their livestock dot the open spaces. A man on horseback pulled up alongside us today to scold Ali for not wearing his hat in the harsh sun - then he rode off leaving us bewildered because he was not wearing a hat! Today we rode 57kms and it was by far one of the toughest days so far. We were up against a gail force wind the entire day and it made even the flats into a granny gear event. We found Darkhan (the second most populous city in Mongolia with something like 100,000 ppl) and checked into an hotel which cost 15,000 Togrogs - which is about $12. Then all of my dreams came true as we found a restaurant with an English speaking owner who brought me a huge plate of rice with a fried egg, potato salad and two slices of tomato - and no meat! I was so starved that after I had finished my heaping plate I asked for another and scarfed it down too!! Oh I guess I should mention she gave us our own private VIP room with a 10 person dining table and wall art paying homage to the world trade centre and the statue of liberty.
